Experience Tourism: Beyond famous landmarks

Writer: Sam BurdenSam Burden

When you think of travelling, you might picture ticking off famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall of China, or the Colosseum. While these iconic destinations are undeniably spectacular, experience tourism takes you a step further. It’s not just about visiting a place; it’s about living it, engaging with its culture, its people, and its story. Experience tourism focuses on activities that allow you to delve deeper into the heart of a destination, offering you hands-on experiences that you can carry with you long after your trip ends.

What is Experience Tourism?

At its core, experience tourism is about immersing yourself in the culture, history, and way of life of a place. Rather than just looking at monuments, you actively participate in local customs, traditions, and everyday practices. It’s about creating a more meaningful connection to your destination, whether it’s through food, art, history, or adventure.

Types of Experience Tourism

  1. Cultural Immersion: This could include cooking classes, craft workshops, or attending a local ceremony. In Kyoto, I had the chance to learn the art of making vegetarian takoyaki, a delicious Japanese street food that goes beyond just tasting—it’s about understanding the tradition behind the dish.

  2. Adventure and Nature: Think hiking in the Alps, kayaking through crystal-clear fjords, or discovering remote islands. These experiences get you up close and personal with nature, giving you a chance to appreciate the environment in a way that traditional sightseeing cannot. One of my most memorable adventures was snorkelling in Fort Lauderdale, where I swam alongside vibrant coral reefs and marine life, offering a refreshing and peaceful connection with the underwater world.

  3. Heritage Tourism:Take part in living history by dressing up in traditional costumes, joining in re-enactments, or visiting heritage villages that recreate ancient ways of life. One of my most memorable experiences was when I had the privilege of dressing up as a Geisha in Kyoto, stepping into the cultural history of Japan. It was an immersive experience that allowed me to connect deeply with the traditions of the Geisha, understanding their art and the history that shaped their role in society. I also participated in heritage walks, which offered a firsthand look at the stories and historical landmarks of the area.

  4. Food and Drink: Food is an essential part of any culture, and food-based experiences allow you to taste and learn about the local cuisine in a way that goes beyond restaurants. Whether it’s a street food tour, a vineyard visit, or a cooking class, food and drink experiences are an excellent way to connect with a place. One of my most memorable experiences was eating 100ft in the air at the O2 in London, combining spectacular views of the city with gourmet dining.

  5. Art and Craft: You can also explore local art through workshops. In Paris, I participated in a graffiti workshop, learning about the history of street art while making my own mark on the city’s vibrant art scene.

  6. Unique Experiences: Sometimes the best experiences are the quirkiest ones! For example, I recently took part in The Dare Skywalk at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where I climbed 46.8 metres above the pitch, taking in breathtaking views of London while testing my nerves. The sense of accomplishment and the views were an unforgettable part of the experience.

  7. Salsa in Miami: A fun, energetic way to immerse yourself in the local culture, salsa dancing in Miami connects you with the city's vibrant Latin roots. Whether you're learning the basics or perfecting your moves, this experience is a lively way to embrace the energy of the local community.

Why Experience Tourism Matters

Experience tourism is not just a trend—it’s a way to travel more consciously and more authentically. Here are some reasons why it's becoming a top choice for travellers:

  1. Stronger Connection: Instead of just observing, you engage. You touch, taste, and learn about the destination. This creates deeper connections to the place and its people.

  2. Supporting Local Communities: When you participate in locally-led experiences, you support the community directly, often spending money in small, independent businesses. It’s a more sustainable way to travel.

  3. Creating Lasting Memories: These experiences are often unforgettable. I’ll always remember the adrenaline rush of being 100ft in the air at the O2, or the peacefulness of making takoyaki in Kyoto. These are the moments that stay with you long after you leave.

  4. Discovering New Skills and Interests: You might end up discovering hidden talents or passions. I never thought I’d enjoy graffiti art, but after participating in the workshop in Paris, I gained a new appreciation for street art and its history.
